Alex Lifeson Says Rush Had Early Doubts About Drummer Anika Nilles

Rush veterans Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee have opened up about their initial uncertainty surrounding drummer Anika Nilles and whether she could step into the formidable space once occupied by the late Neil Peart. In the earliest stages of rehearsal, the chemistry between the trio did not immediately materialize, prompting quiet concerns about the direction of the lineup.
“We rehearsed for four days, and on the fourth day Ged and I sat down and we weren’t sure,” Lifeson revealed in Classic Rock. “It wasn’t quite working with the three of us. We were thinking that maybe we should continue with someone else, just to see how that might feel.”
The hesitation reflected not only the technical demands of Rush’s catalog, but the emotional weight of honoring Peart’s legacy—an expectation that loomed large over every note and nuance.
The Turning Point: When Everything Clicked
By the fifth and final day of rehearsals, however, the narrative shifted dramatically. Nilles absorbed the band’s feedback—particularly regarding Peart’s distinctive feel—and delivered a performance that transformed the atmosphere in the room.
“And on the fifth day, on the last day that we rehearsed, she took all our comments about feel, about Neil’s feel and the way he played… and bang! She nailed the songs all day. It was a real ‘Wow!’ moment,” Lifeson said.
Lee described the breakthrough in equally vivid terms. “She suddenly changed gears, just like Al said, and it all suddenly clicked,” he explained. “She took all that information, processed it, and applied it. That was the real turning point.”
Beyond technique, Lee emphasized the intangible connection that defines great rhythm sections. “We were playing, and she was smiling, and we had this eye contact… and that’s so important to me, and it was so much fun,” he said. “And I thought, man, if she comes on this ride, it’s going to be so good for us because she brings a whole different energy, it’s wonderful.”
Respecting the Legacy, Redefining the Future
For Nilles, the challenge extended far beyond simply replicating parts. Her focus, she explained, was on internalizing the essence of Peart’s playing rather than mimicking it outright.
“In these songs, it’s less about what I play, whether it’s true to the original or whether there’s room for improvisation,” she said. “That comes second. First and foremost, it’s about capturing the right feel… Neil is simply part of this music, and you can’t ignore that or bring your own ego into it. You have to approach it with respect and a lot of sensitivity.”
As Rush prepares for its upcoming dates, the decision to move forward with Nilles signals more than a continuation—it suggests an evolution. While the shadow of Peart remains inseparable from the band’s identity, Lifeson and Lee appear intent on embracing a new dynamic rather than recreating the past outright.
The planned performances, including a return to the same Los Angeles venue that hosted their final show with Peart in 2015, carry a sense of full-circle reflection. Yet instead of serving purely as a nostalgic endpoint, these shows may mark the beginning of a renewed chapter—one that balances reverence with reinvention, and memory with momentum.
