On February 19, 1980, the music world was shaken by the sudden death of Bon Scott, the charismatic lead vocalist of AC/DC. At just 33 years old, Scott’s life was cut short due to acute alcohol poisoning. His passing marked a significant turning point for the band and left an indelible mark on rock history.

Born Ronald Belford Scott on July 9, 1946, in Scotland, Bon Scott moved to Australia during his childhood. He joined AC/DC in 1974, becoming the band’s second lead vocalist and lyricist. With his distinctive voice and energetic stage presence, Scott played a pivotal role in shaping the band’s identity and sound.

Tragic Turning Point for AC/DC’s Rising Fame

In the years leading up to his death, AC/DC experienced a surge in popularity. Their 1979 album, “Highway to Hell,” was a commercial success, propelling the band into the international spotlight. Tragically, Scott’s life came to an end just as the band was on the cusp of even greater fame.

On the evening of February 18, 1980, Scott went out drinking with friends in London. After a night of heavy alcohol consumption, he was left to sleep in a car owned by his friend, Alistair Kinnear. The following morning, Kinnear found Scott unresponsive and rushed him to King’s College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The official cause of death was listed as “acute alcohol poisoning.”

AC/DC’s Resilient Return with “Back in Black”

Despite the profound loss, AC/DC decided to continue making music. They recruited Brian Johnson as their new lead vocalist and, in a remarkable display of resilience, released the album “Back in Black” later that year. The album served as a tribute to Scott and became one of the best-selling albums of all time, featuring hits like “You Shook Me All Night Long.”

Contrary to some reports, “You Shook Me All Night Long” was released in 1980, after Scott’s death, and featured Brian Johnson on vocals. The song reached number 35 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 38 on the UK Singles Chart. It remains one of AC/DC’s most enduring and popular tracks.
