Country music legend Willie Nelson continues to expand one of the longest recording careers in modern music. At 92, the singer-songwriter has announced the release of Dream Chaser, his 156th studio album, marking another milestone while reconnecting with longtime friend and fellow icon Bob Dylan.

Few artists have remained as productive across decades as Nelson. With the new record scheduled for release on May 29 through Legacy Records, the project arrives just weeks after his birthday celebration on April 29, when he turns 93. The announcement highlights both his enduring creative drive and his continued collaboration with major figures in American music.

A Historic Collaboration Returns

The upcoming album includes a special track titled “I Can’t Read Your Mind,” co-written by Nelson, Dylan, and longtime producer Buddy Cannon. The collaboration reunites Nelson and Dylan as songwriting partners more than 30 years after their previous co-write, “Heartland,” which appeared on Nelson’s 1993 album Across the Borderline.

Their partnership reflects a long musical friendship built through shared tours and performances over the years. Dylan has occasionally joined Nelson on the road, and both artists remain active performers despite their age. The new song signals a continuation of a creative relationship that has connected country, folk, and rock audiences for decades.

Nelson’s ability to keep recording new material while honoring past collaborations has helped maintain his relevance across generations. The album blends original compositions with contributions from trusted collaborators who have worked closely with him in recent years.

Inside the Dream Chaser Album

The record features ten tracks, many written alongside Buddy Cannon, who has played a key role in Nelson’s later recordings. The title track, “Dream Chaser,” is credited to Cannon, Bobby Tomberlin, and Nelson, setting the tone for an album focused on reflection and storytelling. Other songs include “Fly Away,” written by Cannon and Bobby Whitlock, and “We’d Make A Good Movie,” a collaboration among Nelson, Cannon, and Tomberlin.

“I Can’t Read Your Mind,” the Dylan collaboration, stands as one of the most anticipated songs on the project. Additional tracks include “Whiskey Wants Me To,” “Wonder What I’m Gonna Do,” and “After All,” all shaped by Nelson’s steady songwriting partnership with Cannon. The album also features “Love Overdue,” written by Mickey Raphael, Donald W. Poythress, and Anna Lisa Graham, along with “I Don’t Think I’ve Cried Today,” credited to Cannon, Tomberlin, and Nelson. The closing track, “Developing My Pictures,” was written by Earl Montgomery.

Alongside the album release, Nelson plans a short national tour beginning April 22 in Alabama and ending May 2 in Texas. The run of shows will take place just before the album arrives, giving fans an opportunity to celebrate both his birthday and new music in person.

Even after decades of touring and recording, Nelson continues to release albums at a pace rarely matched by artists of any generation, while collaborations like this latest effort with Dylan show how enduring musical friendships continue to shape his work.
