Van Halen’s 1984 hit “Jump” has received a modern update for the FIFA World Cup 2026, with guitar legend Steve Vai adding his signature style to the track. The cover, released through Coca-Cola’s Real Thing Records in partnership with Capitol Records, also features Latin pop star J Balvin, singer Amber Mark, and Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker.

A Global Anthem for Football Fans

Joshua Burke, Head of Global Music & Culture Marketing at Coca-Cola, explained the motivation behind the new version. “Being a football fan means feeling everything at full volume – the joy, the heartbreak, and the hope that keeps you coming back,” he said. “Jump captures those shared highs and lows that unite fans everywhere. Coca-Cola and the FIFA World Cup have always brought people together, and we wanted this track to feel like that moment when millions of fans are singing the same feeling at once.”

The cover keeps the iconic synth stabs that defined the original while introducing new pop elements. Balvin delivers an extended rap verse that blends Latin rhythms with the stadium-ready energy of the song. Vai recreates Eddie Van Halen’s famous guitar solo, adding his own technical flair, while Barker drives the beat with dynamic percussion. Fans first caught a glimpse of the track earlier this year through Coca-Cola’s “Bubbling Up” campaign, which teased the collaboration ahead of the tournament.

Revisiting a Classic

“Jump” was originally released on Van Halen’s album 1984 and remains the band’s most successful single. Its synth-driven hook marked a bold departure from the group’s traditional blues-influenced hard rock sound. While some fans were surprised by the shift, the song’s catchy melody and arena-ready energy turned it into one of the decade’s most recognizable anthems. The track’s connection to sports is long-standing; it was voted the most popular sporting anthem in a 2012 poll conducted by PRS for Music.

Amber Mark described her approach to the cover: “Van Halen’s Jump is one of those rare songs that transcends generations, so approaching it came with a lot of respect. Being able to honor the original while bringing a modern perspective was incredibly special.”

Steve Vai’s involvement adds a historical link to the Van Halen family. In the mid-1980s, Vai joined David Lee Roth’s solo band after Roth left Van Halen, performing Eddie Van Halen’s challenging guitar parts night after night on tracks like “Panama” and “Hot for Teacher.” His reinterpretation on the World Cup version carries that legacy forward while giving it a fresh, global appeal.

A Visual Celebration

Alongside the single, an animated music video directed by McFlyy brings the performers to life in stylized form. Football star Lamine Yamal makes a cameo as the world anticipates the 2026 tournament, further tying the song to the global excitement of the World Cup. The collaboration combines rock history, modern pop, and football culture into a high-energy track designed to unite fans around the world.
