On July 25, 2020, Peter Green, the influential blues guitarist who led Fleetwood Mac’s original lineup, passed away at the age of 73 in Canvey Island, United Kingdom. His career, marked by brilliance, was tragically cut short by the effects of psychedelic drugs and mental illness. The law firm Swan Turton, representing Green’s family, confirmed his death at that time, stating he “died peacefully in his sleep.”

Green was widely regarded by fans as one of the premier British blues guitarists of the 1960s. Legendary blues musician BB King once praised Green’s exceptional talent, saying:

“Peter Green has the sweetest tone I’ve ever heard. He was the only one who gave me the cold sweat.”

Beyond his guitar prowess, Green made significant contributions as a songwriter with hits like “Albatross,” “Oh Well,” and “Black Magic Woman.” Although he departed from Fleetwood Mac in 1971, Mick Fleetwood, in a 2017 interview with The Associated Press, emphasized Green’s crucial role in the band’s success. Fleetwood recalled Green’s generosity, stating, “Peter was asked why he called the band Fleetwood Mac. He said, ‘Well, you know I thought maybe I would go ahead sometime and I wanted Mick and John (McVie) to have a band.’ End of story,” highlighting Green’s selflessness and the impact he had on the band’s formation.

In 1998, Green reunited with Carlos Santana to perform “Black Magic Woman” at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where both Fleetwood Mac and Santana were honored. During the event, Fleetwood expressed his gratitude, saying:

“Before giving too long a speech, I would like to thank Mr. Peter Green for having formed Fleetwood Mac in 1967. Thank you, Peter. He left us, then a huge place to continue to where we are today.”
