Katey Sagal has built a career that moves easily between music and acting. At 71, the actress and singer recently reminded fans of her long musical background during a special live event honoring Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen. The celebration marked Fagen’s 78th birthday and featured an intimate concert with several well-known guests, including Sagal.
Best known for playing Peg Bundy on Fox’s Married… With Children, Sagal stepped onstage and delivered a strong performance of Steely Dan’s 1972 song “Dirty Work.” The track comes from the band’s debut album, Can’t Buy a Thrill, and her version earned loud praise from the crowd in attendance.
A Voice Long Before Television Fame
Sagal’s appearance surprised some fans who only know her from television, but music came first in her career. Before sitcom success, she toured as a backup singer for Bette Midler and later worked briefly with Bob Dylan. She was part of Midler’s backing group, the Harlettes, and appeared with her on a 1970s episode of Saturday Night Live.
Her work as a vocalist did not stop there. Over the years, Sagal contributed backing vocals for a wide range of artists, including Gene Simmons, Olivia Newton-John, and Molly Hatchet. She also performed with Etta James and Tanya Tucker, both in studio sessions and live shows.
Stepping Forward as a Solo Artist
After years of supporting major acts, Sagal moved into solo work. She released her first album, Well…, in 1994. A decade later, she followed it with Room in 2004, showing a more personal side of her songwriting. In 2013, she released Covered, a record focused on reinterpretations of songs that shaped her musical taste.
While music remained important, acting soon made her a household name. Her role as Peg Bundy became one of the most recognizable characters in television comedy, helping define the tone of Married… With Children during its long run.
A Career Across Genres and Decades
Sagal later showed her range by starring alongside John Ritter in 8 Simple Rules. She then shifted into darker material as Gemma Teller Morrow on Sons of Anarchy, which aired from 2008 to 2014. She later returned to comedy as Louise Goldufski-Conner on ABC’s The Conners.
The recent Steely Dan tribute took place at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles. The night featured well-known songs and lesser-played tracks, with “Dirty Work” becoming a standout moment led by Sagal’s vocals.

Fans React to a Familiar Talent
Clips from the performance quickly circulated online, drawing comments from fans who recognized her musical past. “She’s also famously a Harlette,” one commenter wrote. “One of Bette Midler’s background singers.” Another added, “Damn, she looks fantastic.”
The reaction served as a reminder that Sagal’s voice has always been part of her story, even when television took center stage.
