Journey debuted their new lineup on Thursday night at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom. It’s their first show since New Year’s Eve 2019. They were supposed to embark on a trek with the Pretenders in 2020, but the global health crisis derailed their touring plans.
It also marked the return of their drummer Deen Castronovo after six years, and the debut of new members – drummer Narada Michael Walden and keyboardist/backup singer Jason Derlatka. Returning bassist Randy Jackson unfortunately had to sit out the gig because of back surgery, and Marco Mendoza filled in for him. Others on the lineup include Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, and vocalist Arnel Pineda.
Their set featured a mix of their greatest hits like “Faithfully”, “Separate Ways”, and “Open Arms” along with rarities and deep cuts. They wrapped up their first set with “Wheel in the Sky”.
Meanwhile, Journey is working on their first album in a decade – the follow-up to 2011’s “Eclipse”. They’re hoping to release it later this year. They’re also set to perform at Atlantic City on August 20, and a pair of shows in the New York City area on August 21. They’re booked to play at the Central Park Homecoming Concert and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Never Forget Concert.
