In May, Richard Goodall, a 55-year-old middle school janitor, captured the hearts of America with his stunning audition on Season 19 of America’s Got Talent (AGT). His powerful rendition of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” left the judges and viewers in awe, turning him into an overnight sensation.
Even Simon Cowell, the notoriously tough judge, was impressed. “That was special, genuinely special. I think America is going to love you,” Cowell said. Goodall’s performance was equally blown away by Heidi Klum, another AGT judge. So much so that she hit the Golden Buzzer, which is a rare privilege that only judges can use twice during auditions. Klum’s gesture showed her immense belief in Goodall’s talent.
The impact of Goodall’s audition didn’t stop there. His performance quickly went viral, racking up millions of views online. As of August 13, the official YouTube video of his audition has garnered over 21 million views, proving that his rendition resonated with a vast audience.
Goodall’s Response to His Golden Buzzer Moment
Reacting to his sudden rise to fame, Goodall remained humble and grounded. “After the show has aired, there has been so much support. I cannot answer all of the messages that have come across, like thousands and thousands,” he shared with WTWO and WAWV TV’s Good Day Live. Despite his newfound fame, Goodall emphasized that he’s still the same person. “How could I possibly become a diva? I’m not; that is not going to happen. I am a basic person just like everyone else.”
Goodall continues to work as a janitor at West Vigo Middle School in Indiana, and he’s determined to stay true to himself, even as his life changes dramatically. “I am still me and I am at West Vigo Middle School right now and I don’t know how you wrap your head around that,” he remarked.
The Singing Janitor Returns to AGT with a Live Show Performance
After nearly three months, AGT fans were thrilled to see Richard Goodall return to the stage for the live shows on August 13. Before his performance, Goodall shared a deeply personal story about his fiancée, Angie, who had suffered a major heart attack and underwent surgery the same day his original audition aired. Despite the challenges, Angie has been a pillar of support for him throughout his AGT journey. “I have no idea how I would live without her,” Goodall expressed. “Tonight, this song is for her.“
With emotion running high, Goodall delivered a heartfelt rendition of Michael Bolton’s 1990 hit, “How Am I Supposed To Live Without You.” While his vocals weren’t flawless, his sincerity and passion earned him a standing ovation from the audience and judges. Simon Cowell acknowledged Goodall as “one of the most memorable contestants” but critiqued his song choice as being old-fashioned. However, Cowell noted that Goodall’s immense fanbase could propel him forward in the competition.
As AGT fans eagerly awaited the results, they had the opportunity to vote for Goodall ahead of the August 14 results show. The question on everyone’s mind was whether this humble janitor could continue his journey and make it to the next stage of the competition.
