Styx guitarist Tommy Shaw recently opened up about how he managed to release lingering resentment towards former bandmate Dennis DeYoung. Known for his impressive, rock opera-style compositions, DeYoung’s creative direction often clashed with the rest of the band, leading to Styx’s hiatus from 1984 to 1990. Although they reunited, tensions persisted, and in 1999, DeYoung was dismissed from the band. Since then, Shaw has taken on some of the vocal responsibilities.
Despite the controversial split, DeYoung has expressed interest in rejoining the band over the years. However, Styx has not been inclined to reciprocate. In a conversation with Cleveland.com, Shaw discussed how he let go of his animosity towards DeYoung as part of his steps to improve his mental health. Shaw explained:
“I used to have a lot of things bugging me.
“After a while, I realized, ‘Why are all these people in my head?’ I was carrying them around, talking to them. Finally, I decided, ‘Okay, everyone up there gather around! I’m letting you all go! We’re not ever going to talk to each other again, and I wish you the best.’ I meant it, and I mean it. By doing that, all the noise went away.”
Shaw continued, “Most people have a ‘resentment list’ they’re walking around with, and I just put mine down, one by one.” Part of that list included the baggage he still held regarding DeYoung. With that weight removed, Shaw feels more at peace with Styx’s past. He noted:
“I felt lighter. And it’s never bugged me again.
“We’re playing [DeYoung’s] songs. We’re going to play ‘The Best of Times,’ I played the solo on that, sang, played Vocoder, and it’s a brilliant song that he wrote. We’re proud to play it. We give him credit for that, you know? Bravo! I’m honored to play it. The fans are going to love it.”
In conclusion, Shaw emphasized that he harbors “no hard feelings” towards DeYoung.
