The relatives of Tom Petty are taking legal measures against RR Auction House for the sale of items from the late musician’s protected collection, which they suspect were stolen.

The auction firm recently purchased numerous items from Petty’s storage for sale. These items encompass a range of clothing such as jackets, vests, shirts, hats, and jeans, footwear, duffle bags, guitar straps, posters, CDs, and vinyl records. It’s worth noting that some of these items bear Petty’s autograph.

Vintage Petty Merchandise Up for Grabs

A satin jacket from 1977, characterized by black-and-white stripes, has reached a price of over $5,700 through 25 bids. There is also a vest inspired by the space-themed attire worn by Petty during Live Aid, which has received 14 bids and is now valued at $1,000.

Additionally, other valuable items up for auction include blue and white denim jackets belonging to Petty, a tour jacket from the 1987 Guns N’ Roses tour featuring a personalized name tag that reads “Tom – I’m With Axl,” a signed promotional poster on vinyl from his 1978 album You’re Gonna Get It!, and a pair of black Zodiac boots.

On the other hand, the family of Petty is actively advocating for the prompt restitution of these belongings and urging supporters and collectors to abstain from participating in any auctions until the matter is resolved. The family said in a statement:

“We believe RR Auction, headquartered in Boston, is offering stolen Tom Petty memorabilia with a completely false provenance inaccurate to fact and in complete denial of clear evidence they have been presented.

“They will not disclose the cosigner who has provided these items or how they were acquired. But they are clearly stolen, there is no other word for it.”

They also expressed that these objects hold immeasurable sentimental and educational significance to the family and the legacy of Petty. They eagerly anticipate the secure retrieval of these items.

As of now, the closing date for the Petty auction lot is set for June 22.
