Rumor has it, that the director himself confirmed that there will be a sequel to one of the greatest comedies in cinema, This is Spinal Tap.
During his interview at the RHLSTP With Richard Herring podcast, This Is Spinal Tap director Rob Reiner said that the sequel for the said comedy movie is in the works already. First announced at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, the production team is set to start in 2024.
The film is supposed to imitate Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz, which is a known concert film that focuses on documenting the final performance of The Band before they broke up. However, they decided to cut the initial plan and focus more on the Spinal Tap’s members David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer). Interestingly, they will be joined by Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks.
When Reiner was asked why after all these years later, he decided to make another Spinal Tap movie, he said:
“The plan is to do a sequel that comes out on the 40th anniversary of the original film and I can tell you hardly a day goes by without someone saying, why don’t you do another one? For so many years, we said, ‘Nah.’ It wasn’t until we came up with the right idea how to do this. You don’t want to just do it, to do it. You want to honor the first one and push it a little further with the story.”
