After two years of live music downtime, the legendary British rock band The Who have announced to hit the road again with their upcoming 2022 two-leg North American tour The Who Hits Back!

Produced by Live Nation, the first run will be a spring leg launches on April 22 at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida, and run through May 28 at Bethel Woods Center of the Arts in Bethel, New York.

The band will then return to the States in the fall for another leg starting on October 2 in Canada at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, and will through until November.

Fans will see the comeback of the two surviving members of The Who’s classic lineup, singer Roger Daltrey, 77, and guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend, 76, two years after their 2019 Moving On! Tour.

Daltrey said:

“Pete and I said we’d be back, but we didn’t think we’d have to wait for two years for the privilege. This is making the chance to perform feel even more special this time around.

“So many livelihoods have been impacted due to COVID, so we are thrilled to get everyone back together – the band, the crew and the fans. We’re gearing up for a great show that hits back in the only way The Who know how. By giving it everything we got.”

Daltrey and Townshend will be joined by guitarist/back-up singer Simon Townshend, keyboardists Loren Gold and Emily Marshall, bassist Jon Button, drummer Zak Starkey, backing vocalist Billy Nicholls, orchestra conductor Keith Levenson, lead violinist Katie Jacoby and lead cellist Audrey Snyder.

The announcement of the tour comes after Townshend recently said he’s reluctant to make a new album with the band:

“As far as a new record, it does take quite a lot of time to put together the 20 or 30 songs that are needed for both Roger and I and any producer that we might be working with to cherry-pick the ones that fit the times.

“Because you write the songs, and then two years later you’re putting them all out, and you just hope that you’re going to hit the mood of the moment.

“A lot of artists now are writing songs at home, recording them at home and putting them out within weeks.

“But our process is the old-fashioned way, and it does take a lot of time. So I don’t know, but I am optimistic. And I’m certainly full of ideas.”
