Bring out the bittersweet keys as Billy Joel is pressing pause on his tour plans. The legendary “Piano Man” has officially canceled all upcoming shows after being diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare neurological condition. According to a statement posted on Joel’s official website, his symptoms were worsened by recent performances, causing issues with his hearing, vision, and balance.
This news follows a previous postponement just two months ago, when Joel pushed back a concert in Milwaukee due to an undisclosed medical issue. At the time, he said he planned to return by July 5, 2025, for a show in Pittsburgh. In that earlier statement, he shared:
“While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first. I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans. Thank you for your understanding.”
Unfortunately, the July show and 16 others have now been scrapped entirely. Refunds will be available at the point of purchase.
Understanding Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus
NPH, or Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, is caused by an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. It leads to symptoms that can mimic dementia, such as trouble walking, memory loss, and difficulty concentrating. The condition is rare, affecting about 0.2% of people in Joel’s age group — those in their 70s.
The good news is that NPH can sometimes be treated through surgery, where excess fluid is drained to relieve pressure. But for now, Joel’s doctors have advised him to step back from the spotlight and focus on rest and recovery.
Fans may have already noticed signs that something was off. During a February 22 performance at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut, Joel took a tumble on stage after tossing his microphone stand into the air during “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me.” Though he was quickly helped up and finished his set, the moment worried fans. One person in the crowd said, “The venue gasped when he hit the floor.”
When Will Billy Joel Return?
That’s the big question — and right now, there’s no clear answer. The 76-year-old music icon is undergoing physical therapy, and no new tour dates have been announced. Many of the now-canceled shows were already rescheduled from earlier postponements, including special co-headlining dates with music legends like Stevie Nicks and Sting.
Still, Joel’s spirit seems strong. His team’s statement assured fans that he’s in good hands and grateful for all the love.
“He’s grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.”
Until then, fans will have to wait patiently — and maybe put on The Stranger one more time. As Joel put it:
“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.”
