Jimi Hendrix is often hailed as the greatest guitarist of all time. Sadly, he’s also a member of the infamous “27 Club,” which includes artists like Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, and Janis Joplin, who all died tragically at the young age of 27.

After his death, rare photos of Hendrix have surfaced, capturing his final moments. One of the last known photos was taken by his girlfriend, Monika Dannemann, at the Samarkand Hotel. These were taken a day before his tragic demise. While losing such a legend so early was a tragedy, these photos serve as a touching reminder of his impact on the music scene and enduring legacy.

Hendrix’s Final Stint and Appearances

Hendrix’s final show was with the Experience held at Temple University in Philadelphia. At this time, his performances were greatly affected due to substance abuse. His very last show on September 6, 1970, at the Open Air Love and Peace Festival in Fehmarn, Germany, also didn’t go well. Battling harsh weather conditions, the band faced a hostile audience, including members of the Hells Angels. Despite these challenges, Hendrix managed to captivate the crowd with a powerful rendition of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Killing Floor.” The final song of their 13-song set was “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).”

On September 11, 1970, Hendrix gave his last interview at the Cumberland Hotel in London. The artist was already in poor health and was suffering from influenza and exhaustion.

Accounts of His Death

Tragically, on September 18, 1970, Hendrix was found dead in the apartment of his girlfriend, Monika Dannemann, at the Samarkand Hotel in Notting Hill. The official cause of Hendrix’s death was an overdose of alcohol and sleeping pills. The autopsy revealed that he had aspirated his vomit and died of asphyxia while intoxicated with barbiturates.

Despite this tragic event, Hendrix’s last photos left us with memories of the iconic artist. His music and influence will forever be etched in music history.
