Wild Cherry is often regarded as a one-hit wonder because aside from their massive 1976 hit Play That Funky Music, no other song cracked the top 40. They had a few minor hits but they were unable to replicate the success of their first record. Nevertheless, Billboard named them Best Pop Group of the Year, and were even nominated for Best New Vocal Group and Best R&B Performance by a Group or Duo in the Grammys.

Here are five of their funkiest songs.

5. Baby You Don’t Know

It sounds like a rip-off version of Play That Funky Music. Maybe that’s why it only peaked at #43 on the US Billboard Hot 100. They were clearly trying to see if the formula would still work. Unfortunately, it didn’t. Zolpidem/ Then again, it’s a fun and bouncy number so we’re not complaining.

4. I Love My Music

Talk about funky! It’s enjoyable and entertaining enough. This song definitely takes you back to the late ’70s and early ’80s when dance clubs were the place to be. It’s not exactly spectacular or life-changing but it’s good enough for us.

3. Hot to Trot

Like most of their songs, this is the stuff you play when you want to relax and just dance the night away. You just can’t be sad while listening to this. It’s catchy and an easy listen at that.

2. What In The Funk Do You See

Another song that gets people up and on the dance floor. It’s the last track in their debut album and it’s totally understandable if people have forgotten this existed but when you hear it, you just know it’s Wild Cherry.

1. Play That Funky Music

This needs no introduction. Everyone, even those aren’t into funky music, has heard this at least once. It topped the charts, gave the band their first and only Platinum record, and helped put them on the map. You know how sometimes you only need just one song for people to remember your name? This is what happened to Wild Cherry. Even today, you can still hear this being played on radio stations.
