The Final Four Song Performance From The Monkees

The Monkees started as a quirky TV show in 1965. The theme was about a fictional band trying to make it big. Producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider had four guys—Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork, and Davy Jones—who would bring the idea to life. As Dolenz later shared, “The Monkees was a TV show about an imaginary band, a band that wanted to be The Beatles. Bands all over the country wanted to be The Beatles. We were a band (as portrayed on the TV show) that was never successful.” Yet, in a twist of fate, their pretend band became a real-life pop sensation, with chart-topping hits that defined a generation.
Nesmith Steps Out: Pioneering Country Rock
After a few years, however, The Monkees’ popularity started to dip. Michael Nesmith decided it was time to go on his own musical career path. He bid farewell to the band with a last official commercial appearance in April 1970. Nesmith was ready to explore a new sound and formed the First National Band. It was a move that shaped the early country rock scene. Nesmith had unique songwriting skills and a musical vision which further developed the genre. He clearly proved he was more than just a Monkee.
A Bittersweet Farewell Tour
After several decades, Nesmith and Dolenz once again reunited for one final tour performance. The show was staged at the Greek Theatre in November 2012. It was both a memorable and emotional night as the fans sang along to classic favorites including “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone,” “Daydream Believer,” “Listen to the Band,” and, of course, “I’m a Believer.” Sadly, just weeks after this final curtain call, Nesmith passed away at age 78, leaving Dolenz as the last surviving member of The Monkees.
Though they started as a “made-for-TV” band, The Monkees became something much bigger. Decades later, their music, humor, and unforgettable personalities still connect with fans, proving that some legends never really fade away.
