The Beatles – ‘I Saw Her Standing There’

The Beatles – ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ | Society Of Rock Videos

She was just seventeen…

‘I Saw Her Standing There’ is a throwback to the early days of The Beatles; before wives, before catastrophic breakups and tragic deaths, they were just 4 lads from Liverpool that liked to skip school to write songs and hang out together. Written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney one afternoon after skipping school, ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ was heavily influenced by Chuck Berry’s ‘I’m Talking About You’ and was performed for the first time in 1964 on The Ed Sullivan Show.

This was the last song John Lennon performed for a paid audience. He played it at Madison Square Garden in 1974 when he took the stage at an Elton John concert, making it the only live duet ever recorded between the two friends.

This song reminds me so much of just being young and having a great time! You have no idea what’s ahead of you and you don’t care as long as there’s great music like this to dance to. As I get older, I understand the Beatles’ appeal – they were cute, talented, and goodness gracious they were catchy!

The Beatles performed this on their first two Ed Sullivan Show appearances in February, 1964. Over 73 million people watched the first show, making The Beatles household names!

(1,2,3,4!)

Well, she was just 17
You know what I mean
And the way she looked was way beyond compare
So how could I dance with another (Ooh)
When I saw her standing there

Well she looked at me, and I, I could see
That before too long I’d fall in love with her
She wouldn’t dance with another (Whooh)
When I saw her standing there

Well, my heart went “boom”
When I crossed that room
And I held her hand in mine…

Whoah, we danced through the night
And we held each other tight
And before too long I fell in love with her
Now I’ll never dance with another (Whooh)
Since I saw her standing there

Well, my heart went “boom”
When I crossed that room
And I held her hand in mine…

Whoah, we danced through the night
And we held each other tight
And before too long I fell in love with her
Now I’ll never dance with another (Whooh)
Since I saw her standing there
