The Allman Brothers Band – “Whipping Post” Live At The Fillmore, 1970

The Allman Brothers Band – “Whipping Post” Live At The Fillmore, 1970 | Society Of Rock Videos

At Fillmore East, February 1970

In February 1970, The Allman Brothers Band embarked on a series of shows at New York’s Fillmore East that would catapult them into the stuff of legend. While the show was full of the band’s vast musical catalog, the real star was the blues soaked rock classic ‘Whipping Post’, the song that would later be called “the finest live rock performance ever committed to vinyl”.

The rendition of ‘Whipping Post’ that ended up on the band’s album At Fillmore East ran at over 22 minutes long, taking up the entirety of one side of the album!

‘Whipping Post’ was a crowd favorite, and given the way The Allman Brothers Band performed it, it’s not surprising; it became an extended jam, leaving plenty of room for improvisation led by Gregg Allman on vocals and the organ, and followed by a guitar duel of sorts between Dickey Betts and Duane Allman.

Fun Fact: Gregg Allman wrote ‘Whipping Post’ on an ironing board cover with a struck match. The lyrics came so quickly that he literally had no time to find a pen and paper, so he used the first thing he saw!

They just don’t make electric performances quite like this anymore!

+ Whipping Post lyrics +

I’ve been run down and I’ve been lied to
And I don’t know why, I let that mean woman make me a fool
She took all my money, wrecks my new car
Now she’s with one of my good time buddies,
They’re drinkin’ in some cross-town bar

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I’ve been tied to the whippin’ post
Tied to the whippin’ post, tied to the whippin’ post
Good Lord, I feel like I’m dyin’

My friends tell me, that I’ve been such a fool
But I had to stand by and take it baby, all for lovin’ you
Drown myself in sorrow as I look at what you’ve done
But nothing seemed to change, the bad times stayed the same,
And I can’t run

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I’ve been tied to the whippin’ post
Tied to the whippin’ post, tied to the whippin’ post
Good Lord, I feel like I’m dyin’

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I’ve been tied to the whippin’ post
Tied to the whippin’ post, tied to the whippin’ post
Good Lord, I feel like I’m dyin’
