Tedeschi Trucks Band Says Goodbye

Another part of the Allman Brothers Band’s vast legacy is gone.

It’s with the heaviest of hearts that we report the death of Tedeschi Trucks band keyboardist and flautist Kofi Burbridge, who passed away over the weekend.

He was 57.

At this time, Mr. Burbridge’s cause of death is not yet known or if it is, has not yet been revealed to the public. However, it’s worth noting that his final years were wrought with health issues stemming from a heart attack he suffered in 2017 for which he underwent surgery to repair an aortic rupture.

It took Mr. Burbridge four months to recover before he returned to Tedeschi Trucks Band in October 2017, but in late 2018 he was sidelined yet again by a health setback that was reported by his bandmates in early January 2019.

The news was broken on the morning of February 16th via Tedeschi Trucks Band’s official Facebook page:

On Sunday, February 17th, Tedeschi Trucks Band took to Facebook once more to pay tribute to their fallen bandmate through song. They chose their favorite performance – a cover of Leon Russell’s “A Song for You,” to immortalize Mr. Burbridge as both a friend and consummate musician.

“The world lost a true genius on Friday. Kofi was a beautiful man, loving friend, and brilliant musician. We are eternally grateful he came into our lives, sharing his many gifts and inspiring us both in music and life. With heavy hearts we will carry on in his spirit, and do our best to honor him and his legacy. He’ll be a part of us forever.”

A Bronx native raised in Washington, D.C., Kofi Burbridge was a classically-trained multi-instrumentalist who provided support via keyboards, organ, flute, and backing vocals throughout a career that spanned more than three decades.

reviously part of Derek Trucks’ Grammy Award winning Derek Trucks Band, Mr. Burbridge was a brilliant part of the Allman Brothers Band’s vast legacy, even sitting in with the band on occasion with brother Oteil Burbridge, who is known for his work in the Allman Brothers Band, Dead & Company and the Tedeschi Trucks Band.

Our hearts go out to the Burbridge family as well as Kofi’s friends, fans, and bandmates past and present as they grieve this tremendous loss and as always, we ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.
