Guesting on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads recently discussed their music journey, shedding light on their “new wave” label, iconic concert film Stop Making Sense, and a new tribute album featuring contemporary artists.

Originally lumped in with punk bands, the group clarified their “garage-y” sound differed from the typical punk aesthetic. Their association with the punk scene came more from their direct approach and aversion to excess than from their actual music style. The term “new wave,” suggested by Sire Records’ Seymour Stein, helped them gain traction with radio stations wary of punk.

The new wave band also shared the creative process behind Stop Making Sense, a concert film praised for its minimalist style and immersive experience, directed by Jonathan Demme. Byrne mentioned avoiding gimmicks like split screens or interviews, focusing instead on a pure, audience-like perspective.

Looking ahead, the band celebrated the release of a tribute album featuring covers by artists such as Miley Cyrus, Paramore, and Lorde. They expressed their excitement seeing new interpretations of their work, likening their songs to “children” being nurtured by a new generation of musicians. This tribute album and the remastered concert film show the group’s remarkable musical influence and legacy.
