Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” is one of the greatest stadium anthems of all time, so it’s only fitting that it will play during Super Bowl LIX. But this time, it won’t be The Boss’ version filling the airwaves. Instead, Grammy-winning R&B artist H.E.R. has reimagined the 1975 classic for a powerful new Dove commercial set to air during the fourth quarter.
The 30-second ad features a young girl running confidently down the sidewalk to H.E.R.’s softer, more soulful take on “Born to Run”. The screen reads, “At 3, these legs are unstoppable. At 14, she’ll think they’re unbearable.” The commercial ends with an important message: “1 in 2 girls who quit sports are criticized for their body type. Let’s change the way we talk to our girls. #KeepHerConfident.”
“Born to Run” is an Anthem of Confidence
H.E.R. shared her inspiration behind the ad in an Instagram post featuring her younger sister EJ. “Music has always helped me be my authentic self. And now I’ve partnered with Dove to help young girls do the same,” she wrote. “My re-imagination of Bruce Springsteen’s iconic “Born To Run” is an anthem of body confidence, so girls like EJ can keep doing the sports they love most.”
In an interview with Billboard, she reflected on how the message personally resonates with her.
“I’m seeing myself in all of these young girls and thinking about all these things that we forget to appreciate. I have a body that simply moves, and I love all the things that it can do.”
She continued:
“We’re born to run. There’s so many layers to that message. It’s like you’re born to be exactly who you are, to chase your path and follow your own dreams and your own heart. It’s not about anyone else. You’re born uniquely you.”
A History of Honoring Music Legends
H.E.R. is no stranger to celebrating rock icons. She wowed audiences at Let’s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince in 2020, performing “The Beautiful Ones” and teaming up with Gary Clark Jr. for “Let’s Go Crazy.” More recently, she made a guest appearance during Usher’s Super Bowl 2024 Halftime Show, further setting her place as an artist who blends genres with ease.
