In a recent interview with Vulture, Stevie Nicks opened up about the future of Fleetwood Mac following the passing of her dear friend and bandmate, Christine McVie, in November 2022.

Nicks, who had an incredibly close bond with McVie, described her as a musical soul mate and best friend, emphasizing the profound loss her absence brings to the band.

“The last time Fleetwood Mac toured was in 2019, notably without guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, who was replaced by Mike Campbell of Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers and Neil Finn. But without McVie, I can’t envision hitting the road again as a band,” Nicks shared. “Who am I going to look over to on the right and have them not be there behind that Hammond organ? When she died, I figured we really can’t go any further with this. There’s no reason to.”

Nicks acknowledged that Fleetwood Mac had once toured without McVie, who left the band in 1998 and returned in 2014.

However, during that period, the band found it challenging to recreate McVie’s songs, leading them to adjust their style significantly.

“We couldn’t recreate those songs. So we became a much more hard-rock band,” Nicks explained.

This sentiment has been echoed by other members of the band. Drummer Mick Fleetwood, speaking at the Grammys earlier this year, expressed uncertainty about Fleetwood Mac’s future.

“I think right now, I truly think the line in the sand has been drawn with the loss of Chris,” he remarked, hinting at a possible end to the band. “I’d say we’re done, but then we’ve all said that before. It’s sort of unthinkable right now.”

The passing of Christine McVie has undoubtedly left a void that Fleetwood Mac members find difficult to fill. For Stevie Nicks, the band’s heart and soul feel incomplete without her. As fans mourn the loss of this musical icon, the future of Fleetwood Mac remains uncertain, with the band members grappling with the legacy left behind by McVie’s extraordinary talent and the unique dynamic she brought to the group.
