Stevie Nicks Opens Up About Lindsey Buckingham’s Toxicity In Their Relationship

Stevie Nicks recently reflected on her long, rocky history with Lindsey Buckingham, telling Rolling Stone she has no regrets about finally parting ways with her former Fleetwood Mac bandmate. She emphasized that her decision to cut ties wasn’t taken lightly, explaining, “I gave him more than 300 million chances.” The last time Nicks and Buckingham crossed paths was at Christine McVie’s celebration of life in 2023, where Nicks felt the power of Christine’s presence. Nicks recalled:
“Christine threw down a hurricane on top of Nobu.
“Almost blew the whole place away…We all felt like she was there because it was really intense.”
This brief interaction with Buckingham, lasting just minutes, reaffirmed Nicks’ decision. Reflecting on years of personal and professional turmoil, she added:
“I dealt with Lindsey for as long as I could. You could not say that I did not give him more than 300 million chances.”
Complicated History Reaches a Breaking Point
Buckingham’s last stint with Fleetwood Mac ended in 2018 amid tensions that culminated in a lawsuit, later settled, over his exit. The band brought in Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers and Neil Finn of Crowded House to fill his role. While their relationship was often tumultuous, Nicks expressed satisfaction with her choice. She shared that the end of their working relationship became clear one night at a MusiCares benefit concert. “It happened one night, not planned,” she said, explaining that she realized the need for closure after Buckingham’s behavior.
“That’s when he wasn’t very nice to anybody; he wasn’t very nice to Harry Styles.”
Nicks revealed she felt her parents’ guidance in that moment. “I could hear my mom saying, ‘Are you really going to spend the next 15 years of your life with this man?’ My dad liked Lindsey a lot, but even he would say, ‘It’s time for you guys to get a divorce.’” With those voices in mind, Nicks decided, “I’m done.”
No Plans for a Fleetwood Mac Reunion
When asked about a possible Fleetwood Mac reunion, Nicks responded with a firm “no.” Without Christine McVie, who passed away in 2022, a reunion isn’t in the cards. “Without Christine, no can do,” she stated earlier this year. Nicks pointed out that Fleetwood Mac had more than enough time together, unlike bands like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, who, according to Graham Nash, missed out on performing more before David Crosby’s passing. Nicks said:
“We had lots of time and tours that could have been the reconciliation tour and ‘now we’re going to quit’ tour.
“Christine and I did everything we could to make it a happy place. And it wasn’t a happy place anymore.”
Wishing Buckingham the Best
Despite the ups and downs, Nicks holds no bitterness toward Buckingham. She expressed a genuine hope for his future in music. “I hope he lives a long life and continues to go into a studio and work with other people,” she said, acknowledging his talent and influence.
“He’s also an icon, and he can teach people. He’s not stopped in his tracks. He can still make music and have fun.”
For Nicks, the end of her connection with Buckingham represents peace and moving forward. With her rich legacy intact and Fleetwood Mac’s era behind her, she’s ready for what’s next – without looking back.
