In the world of rock legends, Slash stands as a formidable figure, renowned for his virtuosic guitar skills and his penchant for collaboration with music’s elite. Recently, the Guns N’ Roses guitarist unveiled the first track from his upcoming blues-themed album, Orgy of the Damned, a mesmerizing cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Killing Floor” featuring the powerhouse vocals of AC/DC’s Brian Johnson and the harmonica talents of Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler.

In a candid interview with Swedish radio station Rokklassiker, Slash revealed the serendipitous nature of the collaboration. “All I would do is pick the songs and then think who I would want to sing ’em,” he explained. Brian Johnson was the first artist who came to mind for “Killing Floor,” given their longstanding friendship. “He was really excited about it,” Slash recalled, noting Johnson’s admiration for Howlin’ Wolf’s music, which he had covered in his youth.

Johnson’s heartfelt rendition of the song was complemented by Steven Tyler’s impromptu offer to contribute his harmonica skills. “I told him I was doing it, on the phone, and he … offered to play harmonica,” Slash recounted. Tyler’s spontaneous addition added a layer of authenticity to the track, creating a memorable recording experience for all involved.

Insight into Tyler’s Contribution

For Slash, collaborating with Johnson and Tyler was more than just a musical endeavor; it was a profound honor. “Their famous bands are among the artists who have been most influential to his own musical journey,” he acknowledged. As a young guitarist, Slash found inspiration in the music of Aerosmith and AC/DC, shaping the trajectory of his own career. Bringing together three generations of rock icons to celebrate Howlin’ Wolf’s legacy felt like a full-circle moment for Slash.
