Roger Daltrey isn’t staying quiet about the recent buzz around The Who. During a stop on his Alive and Kicking and Having Fun! solo tour, the legendary frontman called out what he sees as total fiction in the press.
Referring to the controversy around longtime drummer Zak Starkey, Daltrey told fans:
“The last few weeks in my life, I’ve felt like I’ve been starring in an episode of The Twilight Zone. I’ve been reading about me in the press, doing things I don’t remember ever doing.”
The confusion started when Starkey, who’s played with the band for 29 years, said he was “surprised and saddened” to learn he’d been fired after supposedly overplaying during a show. But Pete Townshend later cleared things up, confirming Zak was still part of the band and blaming a communication mix-up.
“It Wasn’t My Dressing Room!”
Daltrey joked that maybe someone was impersonating him: “According to an inside source there was a war of words in a dressing room. It wasn’t my fucking dressing room, that’s for sure!” He even teased the crowd earlier in the show, saying, “I could have done with this song last week,” before launching into “Waiting For a Friend.”
He also poked fun at the mystery “inside source,” saying, “It makes you wonder – ‘How far inside?’”
Daltrey Isn’t Buying It
Daltrey firmly denied any involvement in the drama. “All I want to say is, it’s fake news. I am not guilty. I have not got a press spokesman. I speak for myself.” He made it clear he doesn’t like being spoken for—especially when it’s not the truth.
Finally, Daltrey had a few strong words for the modern world:
“And fuck social media. I’ve never done it; I’ve never want to do it – it’s taken civilization to the pits.”
In classic Roger fashion, he’s cutting through the noise—and leaving the drama in the dust.
