For The 1978 Holiday Season

By 1978, The Johnny Cash Show was already well-known for having a rather eclectic mix of guests every week. In addition to that, The Johnny Cash Christmas Special series was launched in 1976 and ran every year until 1979. The program featured Cash’s wife June Carter Cash and other members of their family from Nashville.

In one of the most unforgettable numbers, Johnny and June joined singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson and his then-wife Rita Coolidge for a rousing performance of “Christmas Time’s a-Comin’.” It will easily get you into the holiday spirit, even though it’s way past Christmas already.

Both Johnny and Kris would eventually go on to form the musical supergroup The Highwaymen along with country music titans Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. Speaking about the band, Kris said in an interview: “Oh, it was incredible. I had to pinch myself, standing up there with these guys who were my heroes, going around the world singing together as good friends. Although I know I wasn’t so in awe of them that I didn’t get into a few arguments – we were all pretty, uh, self-sufficient and expressive.”

Kris also hosted the 2007 DVD set titled The Best of The Johnny Cash TV Show.
