The Ohio State University Athletic Band paid tribute to Van Halen with their halftime show performance at the Ohio State Spring Game on Saturday, April 16.
The eight-minute presentation features Van Halen’s four classics “Runnin’ With the Devil,” “Dreams,” “Panama” and “Jump.” The marching band has 250 to 300 members, and they would rehearse the routine twice a week every semester, while other groups are selected as musicians for each performance.
The stadium was packed with 60,000 attendees and the game ended with a result of 34-26 led by the Ohio State Scarlet offense over the Ohio State Gray defense.
A statement on the Athletic band’s official website read:
“Unlike the Marching Band, the Athletic Band includes all brass, woodwind and percussion instruments.
“Athletic Band is an open-enrollment ensemble, meaning anyone is welcome to participate. … Among the highlights of the Athletic Band are marching full pregame and halftime shows at the annual Spring Game, performing Script Ohio on Ice at one hockey game per semester and performing Script Ohio on court during a spring-semester basketball game.”

“Incredible! I don’t know how they do that?! Van Halen is the greatest rock band of all time in my opinion so I obviously love this.”
“How nice this is to be able to watch this. It’s too far to go there, because we’re in Hawaii, but this is so nice. What a great band and program.”
“I’m in tears! GREAT JOB YOU GUYS!! Thank you to whomever the marching band director is who came up with this tribute to the Mighty Van Halen!!”
