Neil Diamond – “I Am… I Said” Live
A Deep And Meaningful Neil Diamond Classic
It took about four months for Neil Diamond to finish composing “I Am… I Said.” It was released on March 15, 1971 as a single. This timeless classic is a very powerful song and you can feel it each time you listen to Neil’s soulful baritone voice singing the meaningful lyrics. You can tell it was deeply personal and each line seemed to reveal something about Neil himself.
Neil Diamond told Q magazine July 2008 that he had to write this autobiographical song “to find myself.” Diamond added “It’s a tough thing for me to gather myself after singing that song.”
It has received positive reviews from critics and was even featured in the movie “Holy Smoke” released in 1999. It was also very successful but its ascent to the top of the charts was quite slow at first.
- Peaked at number 4 both in the U.S. Pop Singles Chart and UK Pop Singles Chart
- Nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male in the Grammy Awards
Neil Diamond told Mojo magazine July 2008 that this song came from a time he spent in therapy in Los Angeles. He said: “It was consciously an attempt on my part to express what my dreams were about, what my aspirations were about and what I was about. And without any question, it came from my sessions with the analyst.”
