A Global Take on a Classic
More than 20 musicians and dancers from eight different countries have come together for a new version of The Doors’ “Riders on the Storm.” The video will premiere on YouTube on Jan. 9. It was produced by Playing For Change, a group known for bringing artists together across borders and cultures through music.
The project also features guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore, the two surviving members of The Doors. Both return to their original parts, grounding the track in its roots while allowing space for new voices. Their presence links the past directly to the present in a way that feels natural and respectful.
Honoring The Doors’ Legacy
This release arrives as The Doors mark 60 years since forming in Los Angeles in 1965. The original lineup included vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, Krieger, and Densmore. Over a short span, the band shaped a sound that blended rock, blues, and poetry, leaving a lasting mark on music history.
To honor that history, the new recording includes archival vocals from Morrison, carefully placed within the mix. The video also pays tribute to Manzarek, whose keyboard lines defined much of the band’s sound. These elements help keep the spirit of the original song alive while allowing it to grow.
Artists From Many Worlds
The collaboration features Lukas and Micah Nelson, singer-songwriter Sierra Ferrell, Foo Fighters keyboardist Rami Jaffee, and producer Don Was. They are joined by performers from around the world, including the Lakota Drum Group, Boboulay Sissokho, Macarena Montesinos, Guarani Andeva Group, and Iron Cult Dancers.
Each artist recorded their part from their own location, a core part of Playing For Change’s approach. The result blends different cultures and styles without losing the mood of the original song. Short preview clips have already appeared on Playing For Change’s social media pages.

From Theaters to YouTube
The video was first shown on the big screen in early December. It played before select screenings of a newly remastered 4K version of the documentary When You’re Strange. The updated film opened in limited theaters on Dec. 4 and revisits the band’s rise and legacy.
Playing For Change operates as a nonprofit group that supports music and arts education in more than two dozen countries. Since launching, the organization has released over 70 “Song Around the World” videos, each built from performances recorded in different parts of the globe.
Supporting New Music Programs
Proceeds and attention from this “Riders on the Storm” release will help fund the Playing For Change Foundation’s first music program in the United States. The effort is organized with First Peoples Fund, an Indigenous-led nonprofit focused on strengthening Indigenous communities through culture and art.
The video’s release date also carries personal meaning for Krieger. It premieres one day after his 80th birthday. He has two confirmed shows next year in the Los Angeles area, including dates at the Grove of Anaheim on Feb. 27 and the Whisky a Go Go on March 28.
