Metallica’s Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hammett delighted Boston sports fans with a special treat on Sunday night during their concert at Gillette Stadium. The duo led the crowd in a spirited sing-along of Neil Diamond’s classic “Sweet Caroline,” a beloved anthem at Boston’s Fenway Park. For over two decades, this song has been a staple during the eighth inning of every Red Sox game, with fans enthusiastically joining in.
Before diving into the performance, Trujillo playfully warned the audience, “This song is really scary, super heavy, and if you start moshing, try not to injure yourself, because it’s such a scary song I’m already shaking.” The crowd eagerly participated, shouting “Bum, bum, bum” and “So good! So good! So good!” in all the right places.
Trujillo and Hammett are known for their bass and guitar “doodles” at Metallica concerts, often selecting songs that connect with the city’s local culture. In the past, they’ve performed Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son” in Kansas and Grand Funk’s “We’re an American Band” in Michigan, tailoring their mini-sets to engage with each audience uniquely.
The Gillette Stadium show, which featured a 15-song set, faced a significant delay due to severe weather that led to the evacuation of the crowd before the performance. However, the venue’s curfew was extended, allowing Metallica to deliver a full set that concluded with powerful renditions of “One” and “Enter Sandman.”
Despite the weather challenges, the night at Gillette Stadium was memorable for Boston fans hearing a song deeply ingrained in the city’s sports culture.
