The legendary duo Elton John and Bernie Taupin were celebrated on Wednesday night at the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song ceremony in Washington, D.C. The event witnessed an array of performances paying homage to their remarkable contribution to music.

Kicking off the evening was none other than Metallica, delivering a powerful rendition of “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.” Following them was Annie Lennox, who mesmerized the audience with her rendition of “Border Song.” Lennox later joined forces with Joni Mitchell, last year’s recipient of the same prize, and Brandi Carlile for a spirited performance of “I’m Still Standing.”

Reflecting on the influence of John and Taupin, Metallica’s James Hetfield expressed admiration, stating, “They’re an inspiration to us.” His bandmate Kirk Hammett echoed the sentiment, highlighting the profound impact of John and Taupin’s music on his childhood. Notably, John reciprocated the homage by covering a Metallica song, “Nothing Else Matters,” for the Black Album 30th-anniversary box set in 2021.

The concert featured additional performances by Jacob Lusk, Charlie Puth, Garth Brooks, Maren Morris, and Billy Porter, further underscoring the widespread influence of John and Taupin’s songwriting prowess.

Expressing gratitude for the prestigious recognition, Elton John remarked, “I’ve been writing songs with Bernie for 56 years, and we never thought that one day this might be bestowed upon us.” He expressed profound humility at being recognized alongside great American songwriters, emphasizing his thrill and honor at accepting the accolade.

For those unable to attend the live event, the concert will be broadcast on PBS on April 8, allowing audiences worldwide to experience the magic of the evening’s performances.
