Megadeth has released a video for their new song “Let There Be Shred,” offering fans another glimpse into the band’s forthcoming self-titled album, due out Jan. 23. The release marks a significant moment for the long-running metal institution, as the album has been confirmed as Megadeth’s final studio effort.

Built around blistering guitar work and relentless speed, “Let There Be Shred” serves as a nod to frontman Dave Mustaine’s early years and the aggressive musical approach that helped give rise to thrash metal. The song’s unapologetically fast pace and sharp hooks reflect the core principles that defined the band from its inception.

A Visual Tribute to Speed, Power, and Discipline

The video for “Let There Be Shred” pairs the track’s intensity with scenes of mixed martial arts combat, featuring Mustaine himself in action. The imagery reinforces themes of discipline, precision, and physical endurance—qualities that parallel the technical demands of Megadeth’s music.

Looking back on the band’s earliest days, Mustaine said the track was designed to capture Megadeth’s original identity. “When Megadeth started, we said we would be fast and furious – we said so on the flyers we handed out,” he explained. “This song is fast and furious… It has a very hooky chorus that draws you in, and you can’t help but play air guitar and headbang.”

Mustaine also described the video as a personal homage. “It was a blast to make and it’s a tribute to my first sensei, Benny ‘The Jet’ Urquidez, and my professor, Reggie Almieda,” he said. “Everyone on the set was really stoked to see each of us do our stunts. In the end, we got the balance of shredding and ass-kicking just right!”

A Lifelong Pursuit of Mastery, Onstage and Off

At 64, Mustaine continues to pursue challenges beyond music. He recently earned a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, adding to his existing black belts in Urquidez’s nine-style system and Songham taekwondo. He has also previously worked as an instructor in the latter, underscoring a lifelong commitment to discipline and personal growth.

In August 2025, Mustaine announced that the upcoming album would bring Megadeth’s recording career to a close. Explaining the decision, he said:

“There’s so many musicians that have come to the end of their career, whether accidental or intentional. Most of them don’t get to go out on their own terms on top, and that’s where I’m at in my life right now.”

Saying Goodbye on Their Own Terms

While the decision to end Megadeth has been an emotional one, Mustaine framed it as a moment of gratitude rather than regret. “I have traveled the world and have made millions upon millions of fans and the hardest part of all of this is saying goodbye to them,” he said. “I hope to see all of you on our global farewell tour. Don’t be mad, don’t be sad, be happy for us all, come celebrate with me these next few years.”

As Megadeth prepares to close this chapter, “Let There Be Shred” stands as both a celebration and a reminder of what made the band endure for more than four decades: speed, precision, and an unyielding commitment to intensity. Rather than fading quietly, Megadeth appear determined to leave behind a final statement that reflects their origins, honors their evolution, and allows them to step away on their own terms—loud, uncompromising, and unmistakably Megadeth.
