Mike Campbell, renowned for his work with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, is set to release his third album with his band, The Dirty Knobs, titled Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits on June 14. The LP promises a mix of fresh tunes and long-awaited tracks, featuring collaborations with music icons like Graham Nash, Lucinda Williams, Chris Stapleton, and Campbell’s former Heartbreakers bandmate, Benmont Tench.

Campbell’s journey with the album reflects a blend of nostalgia and renewal. Many of the songs on Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits have been nestled in Campbell’s archive for years, waiting for the right moment to emerge. Reflecting on this process, Campbell shared with Rolling Stone:

“Back in the day, I would write songs and then give them to my partner Tom, and that’s all I ever did with them. I gave him so much he couldn’t possibly ever deal with it all. I stuck a lot up on the shelf for future assessment. And so here I am in the future and I pulled them out.”

One of the highlights from the album is the track “Dare to Dream,” featuring Graham Nash. Campbell expressed the emotional significance of the song’s creation, especially during the filming of its music video at the Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Campbell recalled:

“It was spiritual.
“I got a little wistful about Tom because we had been there together, and I stood where we had set up with Mudcrutch originally in that room. I got a lot of flashbacks of sweet memories.”

Nash’s contribution added a special touch to the song, elevating it with his signature vocal style. Campbell expressed his gratitude, saying:

“[Nash] kind of made it sound a little bit like the Hollies blend on the vocals. He really lifted the song up, and it was just a thrill to have a hero of mine singing my song.”

Following the album’s release, Campbell and The Dirty Knobs are gearing up for a summer tour, commencing on June 21. While drummer Matt Laug won’t be joining them due to commitments with AC/DC, another former Heartbreaker, Steve Ferrone, will take his place. The tour promises a blend of tracks from all three Knobs albums alongside classic Heartbreakers hits, offering fans a nostalgic yet vibrant musical experience.

With Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits, Campbell is starting a new chapter in his life, and he recognizes that it will be difficult to perform without his late friend and bandmate, Tom Petty. He admitted:

“I’m still grieving.
“It’s a bittersweet thing. We do an old song because I still miss my brother. But he’s still alive in those songs.”

With its mix of old memories and fresh collaborations, Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits is poised to captivate both loyal fans and newcomers alike, offering a testament to Campbell’s enduring musical legacy.
