Bob Dylan sang “Dance Me to the End of Love” by Leonard Cohen at his concert last Sunday in Montreal, Quebec.

Known for being one of the most successful singer/songwriters of the late ’60s and a Montreal homegrown artist, Cohen first released the song “Dance Me to the End of Love” in 1984 as part of his album entitled Various Positions. Although Dylan had previously covered some of Cohen’s songs, it was his first time to perform the said song and he did that where the original singer used to live.

In the past, Dylan was also seen performing other songs from Cohen’s catalog such as the song “Hallelujah.” Not that he only performed it, but Dylan used to speak highly of Cohen and the song in some of his interviews.

In one interview he did in The New Yorker in 2016 he mentioned:

“When people talk about Leonard, they fail to mention his melodies, which to me, along with his lyrics, are his greatest genius. Even the counterpoint lines — they give a celestial character and melodic lift to every one of his songs.”

“Dance Me to the End of Love” by Cohen is just one of the many songs that Dylan has covered ever since he started hitting the road for his Rough and Rowdy Ways tour. He also used to perform “Friend of the Devil” by the Grateful Dead, “Into the Mystic” by Van Morrison, “Bad Actor” by Merle Haggard and many others in the previous year.

This gimmick that Dylan used (playing songs connected to the city in which his tour stops), is still being done this year. Truly, the artist has his own way to create a bond with his fans.

The Rough and Rowdy Ways Tour is set to continue by early December and will be playing more dates in 2024.
