The Stoke-on-Trent City Council has given the green light for the installation of a statue honoring Motörhead’s lead vocalist, Lemmy Kilmister, in Burslem, the place where he was born.

Standing at 2.2 meters tall, the statue will find its place in Burslem’s market square, marking the birth town of Lemmy, originally named Ian Fraser Kilmister, before his family relocated to Newcastle-under-Lyme. Despite spending much of his childhood in Wales, Lemmy’s roots trace back to this town, where he founded Motörhead in 1975.

The project is expected to cost around £50,000, and a fundraising campaign has been initiated to gather the necessary funds. Local sculptor Andy Edwards, known for crafting the renowned Beatles statue in Liverpool, will mold the statue from Staffordshire clay once the funds are secured.

Initial concerns were raised by the police regarding potential disturbances due to the statue’s presence, but a solution was reached by increasing the plinth’s height from 2.5 meters to 3 meters, mitigating these worries.

This upcoming statue won’t be the sole homage to Lemmy. Back in 2016, a statue was unveiled in Los Angeles at the Rainbow Bar and Grill, a year after the iconic musician passed away at the age of 70 from prostate cancer. Additionally, another tribute stands at Germany’s Wacken Open Air festival. Earlier this year, surviving members Mikkey Dee and Phill Campbell paid their respects by interring Lemmy’s ashes at a bar bearing his name in the German village of Wacken, with some ashes scattered on the festival’s grounds.

On a different note, Mikkey Dee reiterated his stance that Motörhead will not reunite with a new lead singer. In an interview with Chaoszine, Dee emphasized the impossibility of replacing Lemmy but hinted at the possibility of performing the band’s songs in tribute to their late frontman.
