Mark James, the talented songwriter behind famous hit classics like “Suspicious Minds” and “Always on My Mind” passed away last June 8 at his Nashville residence. He was the man behind Elvis Presley’s iconic hits and had an exceptional songwriting career. His cause of death remains undisclosed.
His family shares with the Houston Chronicle:
“He was a captivating storyteller who had the sweetest smile, the most infectious laugh, and a twinkle in his eye that never dimmed.”
James was acclaimed as one of the most distinguished 20th-century songwriters. His compositions have been featured in movies like Reservoir Dogs and Guardians of the Galaxy.
His songwriting talent was first recognized in 1983 when he won two Grammy Awards for “Always on My Mind,” recorded by Willie Nelson. The song earned both Song of the Year and Country Song of the Year honors.
Back in 2000, BMI recognized James as one of the top songwriters of the century, placing him alongside legends like Elton John and Paul McCartney. His remarkable career finally earned him a place as an inductee in 2014 in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. His great compositions, “Always on My Mind” and “Hooked on a Feeling” were featured on BMI’s list of the 100 greatest songs of the 20th century, along with “Suspicious Minds.”
James was born in Houston, Texas as Francis Rodney Cambon. He began his music career in his hometown before moving to Memphis after serving in Vietnam. “The Eyes of a New York Woman” was his first hit in 1968, and was followed by “Hooked on a Feeling” and “It’s Only Love” in 1969. Although James initially recorded “Suspicious Minds” in 1968, it was Elvis Presley’s rendition in 1969 that rocketed the song to the top of the charts, making it a number-one hit.
James leaves behind a legacy of musical brilliance and a family who adored him. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Karen Zambon, their daughters Sammie and Dana Zambon, and his beloved grandchildren.
