Kevin Cronin, the passionate frontman of REO Speedwagon, is determined to save the band he has devoted his life to.

In a heartfelt social media post, he stated, “I will always hold out hope that REO Speedwagon can be rescued. This band is my life’s work, and I would never do anything except what I feel is in REO’s best interests.” However, after a series of unfortunate events, the band is facing a tough decision regarding its future.

Tour Era for REO Speedwagon Ends

Things took a turn for the worse when REO Speedwagon had to cancel their final shows with Train in early September due to Cronin needing medical care for an unexplained issue. The situation escalated when longtime bassist Bruce Hall expressed his desire to return to touring after a challenging recovery from back surgery. However, he was reportedly told no due to concerns about his posture. This disagreement led to a shocking announcement in mid-September: “It is with great sadness that we announce REO Speedwagon will cease touring effective Jan. 1, 2025.” With Neal Doughty, the last remaining original member, already announcing his retirement, the future seemed uncertain.

Their most recent concert on September 8 at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California, featured substitutes Derek Hilland on keyboards and Matt Bissonette on bass, highlighting the band’s struggles.

REO Speedwagon’s Comeback

While Cronin focuses on his recovery, REO Speedwagon also had to cancel a scheduled headlining show on September 28 in Coarsegold, California. They shifted their September 27 concert in Rancho Mirage to December 8 and rescheduled a trio of October stops at the Venetian in Las Vegas to December 18, 20, and 21.

Despite the hurdles, Cronin is optimistic about returning for their concert with Rick Springfield on October 23 in Eugene, Oregon. He declared:

“I am going to make the most of the rest of our 2024 tour dates.
“I love this band and I love our loyal fans, and I will be giving my 100% effort to the upcoming shows.”

After being discharged from the hospital in late September, Cronin shared an encouraging health update, stating:

“According to my doctors I ‘dodged a bullet.’ I appreciate the outpouring of positive, healing energy from family, friends, and fans all across the country and around the world. Your support continues to be an inspiration and key to my recovery.”
