Journey fans were in for a surprise when the band’s Houston Rodeo performance was abruptly stopped due to an electrical fire beneath the stage. The band had just started playing their classic hit “Don’t Stop Believin’” when the power suddenly cut out, leaving both the band and the massive crowd of nearly 80,000 fans stunned.
The Power Cuts Out Mid-Performance
The incident occurred at NRG Stadium on Friday night, just as Journey was gearing up for the first chorus of their legendary anthem. With the stage lights out and the instruments silent, lead singer Arnel Pineda kept the energy going by leading the crowd in an impromptu singalong before the band had to leave the stage.
Shortly after, an announcer addressed the audience, confirming the show had to be canceled. “Due to an electrical fire, the show cannot continue,” the message stated, per the Houston Chronicle. The stadium lights came up, signaling an early end to the concert, and fans were directed to exit the venue. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Houston Rodeo and Journey Respond to the Mishap
The Houston Rodeo quickly released a statement, expressing regret over the situation. The statement read:
“Due to an unforeseen electrical incident under the stage area, we regretfully announce the cancellation of tonight’s Journey concert.
“We sincerely apologize to all fans for this disappointment. Our team is working diligently to assess the situation, and we will provide updates regarding rescheduling options and/or refunds as soon as possible.”
Journey’s drummer, Deen Castronovo, also took to Instagram to share his thoughts on the chaotic night. He wrote:
“Hey, Houston! An act of God tonight! Fire broke out underneath the stage—right under my drum riser!
“I was literally on fire for four and a half songs, all the power cables melted, and the show was a BUST! That doesn’t mean we won’t be back soon, because we love you all—and WE WILL RETURN! #dontstopbelievin God bless you all!”
Neal Schon Addresses Fans
Guitarist Neal Schon also weighed in on the unexpected ending, showing his appreciation for the fans and frustration over the show’s abrupt halt. Schon wrote:
“Last night at Houston TX Rodeo we had an amazing overly packed house of 79-80 thousand fans that showed up to see us!!
“The only unfortunate thing was that after getting off to a slamming start, the Rodeo had an electrical failure, and fire broke out under the stage. Thank you, Houston, for singing ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’ before we were rushed off the stage. I felt terrible for our fans and offered to play tonight to make it up to y’all, but they were not able to make it happen. So until next time – Love and Respect.”
What’s Next for Journey?
Despite the setback, Journey isn’t slowing down. The band is set to resume their tour with a performance at the Yaamava Theater in Highland, California, on Sunday. While Houston fans didn’t get the full show they were expecting, Journey made it clear they’ll be back to make things right.
