Joni Mitchell Proves Her Legendary Status With 2024 Grammy Win
Joni Mitchell clinched the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Folk Album with her live recording, “Joni Mitchell at Newport.” The album triumphed over contenders like Dom Flemons’ “Traveling Wildfire,” the Milk Carton Kids’ “I Only See the Moon,” and works by Nickel Creek, Old Crow Medicine Show, Paul Simon, and Rufus Wainwright. Mitchell, joined by Brandi Carlile, accepted the award onstage in Los Angeles.
“Joni Mitchell at Newport Live” captured the spontaneous “Joni Jam” at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival, where Brandi Carlile served as emcee. With liner notes by Cameron Crowe, the album featured Mitchell’s first public performance in nearly a decade. Carlile, Blake Mills, and Wynonna Judd were among the supporting musicians who joined Mitchell on stage.
After recovering from a 2015 brain aneurysm, Mitchell has gradually resumed public engagements in recent years. Notably, she accepted the Kennedy Center Honors and a Grammy Award in 2022 for “Archives, Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963-1967).” Looks like there’s no stopping Joni Mitchell now. We hope to see her more in concerts and maybe more new music too right?
