Joe Walsh Missing — Fans Felt It the Moment the Eagles Took the Stage
The Eagles took the stage at the Sphere on January 24 without longtime guitarist Joe Walsh after he was sidelined by the flu.
Notably, it marked the first time the veteran rock band had performed a show without Walsh since he officially joined the group in 1975. Addressing the Las Vegas audience, Don Henley explained that the band faced a difficult call once they learned Walsh was too ill to perform.
Henley told the crowd the group weighed two options: cancel the concert altogether or push forward and play. Ultimately, they chose the latter, gathering earlier that day for an emergency two-hour rehearsal. Henley emphasized that the band’s depth of talent made it possible to move ahead with confidence.
How the Band Handled Walsh’s Absence
Vince Gill stepped into Walsh’s role, taking on both guitar and vocal duties for signature tracks such as “Rocky Mountain Way” and “Life’s Been Good.” Guitarists Deacon Frey and Chris Holt shared lead responsibilities on “Hotel California,” with Frey delivering the song’s famed solo. The setlist saw only one adjustment, as “Best of My Love” replaced “Funk #49.”
Walsh had attempted to power through the previous night’s show but was forced to leave the stage at times, and “Rocky Mountain Way” was ultimately omitted. Henley praised his bandmate’s determination, telling fans that Walsh had bravely pushed through despite being unwell and reassuring them that he simply needed time to recover.
A Major Achievement for the Eagles
The Eagles are scheduled to continue their Sphere residency through the end of March, with their next performance set for January 30. The band is also celebrating a major milestone: Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 has become the first album to receive quadruple diamond certification from the RIAA, signifying sales surpassing 40 million copies. It’s another high point in a career filled with enduring success.
