Fallon Salutes Bowie’s Legacy With 1971 Hunky Dory Classic
If James Corden cornered the market on epic road trip jam sessions, then his late night rival Jimmy Fallon cornered the market on celebrity impressions. Whether it’s imitating Neil Young, The Kinks or a certain extraterrestrial rock legend, you’ve got to give Jimmy credit – consistency is key and while he’s known for breaking character fairly often, when he commits to one of his idols, he commits!
In the weeks and months following the death of David Bowie, every late night talk show host dedicated parts of their show to Bowie’s legacy, but only Jimmy Fallon dared to actually combine his love for celebrity impressions and Bowie and crafted a faithful cover of “Life On Mars?” with the help of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin after a ‘surprise’ backstage run-in found Martin tooling around with a piano and working out the 1971 Hunky Dory classic.
If you’re looking for textbook Fallon silliness, you won’t find it here: he’s got a pretty decent singing voice and not even doing a Bowie impression takes away from his performance, and when paired with Coldplay’s Martin tickling the ivories, you’ve got yourself a pretty solid “Life On Mars?” cover that’s bound to get a smile out of you. Enjoy!
