Janis Meets Johnny, Texas Blues Ensue

Looking back, it’s always mindblowing how connected Janis Joplin was to other musicians – literally, if you search her name and combine it with any other prominent musician from the late 60s, odds are that they worked with Janis in some capacity. Whether it was a duet onstage, or a recording of the two having a giggle backstage, there wasn’t a musician who wasn’t directly touched by the magic that was Janis Joplin.

Fun Fact: Janis wasn’t the only big name that Johnny was linked to! Over the course of his career, Johnny played and recorded with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, and even Muddy Waters.

One such musician was Texas blues legend Johnny Winter, who by 1969 was embroiled in a brief love affair with Janis that resulted in this killer duet of ‘Help Me Baby’ performed by the two live in Boston; Janis may have hated her Texas roots, but this performance between the two legends is pretty much everything we’ve ever come to love about that gorgeous, swampy, Southern Comfort soaked Texas blues sound!

It takes Janis a minute or two to come in, but that’s okay – we’re totally okay with listening to Johnny wail on his guitar, and when Janis chimes in on ‘Help Me Baby’ it’s quite literally a match made in music heaven.
