Gene Simmons, famously known for his abstinence from alcohol and drugs, recently shared an intriguing anecdote about his sole experience with getting high.

During a podcast discussion alongside his son Nick, Gene delved into the story that unfolded after a KISS concert in Detroit during the mid-’70s. Unaware of the cannabis content in brownies, Gene ingested several of them, leading to an unexpected turn of events.

Despite his lifelong avoidance of mind-altering substances, Gene found himself in an altered state after consuming the brownies. He vividly described the surreal effects, including distorted perceptions and hallucinations, as the room seemed to expand around him.

Jaan Uhelszki, an eyewitness to the incident and the co-founder of Creem magazine, played a pivotal role in assisting Gene during his unusual experience, ensuring his well-being.

Reflecting on his steadfast commitment to sobriety, Gene credited his mother, a Holocaust survivor, for instilling in him a deep sense of responsibility and respect. He expressed his desire never to disappoint her by indulging in behaviors that could potentially harm him.

While the recounting of the incident carried a humorous tone, Gene’s unwavering stance on abstaining from drugs and alcohol remains rooted in his reverence for his mother’s resilience and the hardships she endured:

“She was in a concentration camp when she was 14 years of age. And I never wanted to break her heart. And I was always aware I never wanted to disappoint her — there was enough aggravation. So I never smoked cigarettes, never got high, never got drunk.”
