Gene Simmons of KISS has his own strong opinion when it comes to playing bass guitar: he believes using a pick is way much better than using his fingers.

The debate over finger-picking versus using a pick has divided bass players and guitarists, with some still preferring one technique over the other while others love to experiment with both. Though finger-picking drives a distinct playing style for some, it’s awkward for other guitar players.

Simmon, leaning more toward using picks, says it gives a clearer sound, especially during live performances. He shared with MusicRadar back in 2018:

“Respectfully, studio musicians who play with their fingers live have no idea that we can’t hear what they’re playing, because there’s no actual definition on the note that’s coming out.
“You can do that and love it and have no fuckin’ idea what he’s playing, but you love that low end, or you can be like [late Yes bassist] Chris Squire and have a very bright sound, where you can hear the attack and therefore hear the note that’s actually being played.”

However, Simmons did acknowledge that each bassist has their preferred style, also emphasizing that live sound mixing enhances the overall performance and how skilled sound mixers can help bring out the fine points of sounds.

On the other hand, bassists like Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fieldy of Korn prefer finger-playing techniques. Both musicians have achieved success with their bass-heavy music despite their contrasting approaches.

In the end, whether a bassist chooses to play with a pick or fingers depends on personal preference, musical style, and a musician’s desired outcome. That is what makes every musical artist unique. So even with bass guitar playing, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.
