The star-studded tribute concert last Thursday at Massey Hall, celebrating the life of Gordon Lightfoot had a surprise reunion. Rush duo Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson took center stage joining the house band Blue Rodeo and performing “The Way I Feel” in honor of Lightfoot. Singer-songwriter Lightfoot died last May at the age of 84.

Other famous Canadian artists who honored the late singer and songwriter included Burton Cummings, Tom Cochrane, Dallas Green of City and Colour, and Lightfoot’s daughter, Meredith Moon.

Looking back at Lightfoot’s musical influence on him and other musicians, Lee shares:

“Gordon Lightfoot was to musicians of my generation a true Canadian musical hero — and to boot he was a really sweet person. Both Alex and I really wanted to pay tribute.”

The duo’s Massey Hall surprise appearance was their first public collaboration since September 2022, when both joined in several tribute concerts for the late Taylor Hawkins, drummer of Foo Fighters. Lifeson told UCR that they have been jamming together:

“We started that a couple of weeks ago. We get together one day a week over at his place. We just picked some Rush songs and we started playing them and we sound like a really, really bad Rush tribute band.”

Though this could be a piece of exciting news for Rush fans, Lifeson said a reunion is not likely to happen without Neil Peart, the group’s drummer who passed away in 2020. Lifeson shared to Classic Rock History:

“So many people remember us, and there’s sadness amongst our fans that it ended, and they want more, but you can’t go back.”We can’t just go and get another drummer, and go out and play concerts, and make new material. It just would not be the same. It would just be a money ploy.”
