The famous singer Linda Ronstadt had a voice that could melt hearts. Her life was full of color and variety, just like her music. Linda’s life was anything but normal, having several number-one hits and famous relationships.
A Melody of Love Affairs
Linda’s romantic life was a tapestry woven with threads from the entertainment industry’s finest. In the late ’60s and early ’70s, she found herself amidst the burgeoning country rock scene, where she met producer John Boylan. Their relationship blossomed both professionally and personally, with Boylan managing her career and the two living together. However, Linda later reflected:
“I was quite a needy lover who wanted Jon to fulfill all her asks. Unfortunately, he just couldn’t give as much as she took.”
Seeking solace, Linda entered a relationship with rock singer JD Souther in 1972. Their bond was both romantic and creative, co-writing songs like “Faithless Love” and “Hearts Against the Wind.” Even though they had a strong bond, they broke up in 1974.
Linda’s relationships kept going up and down. A comic named Albert Brooks liked her and thought she was “the one,” but they broke up after two years. There were also rumors that she was seeing stars, Bill Murray, and Jim Carrey. With Carrey, their romance sparked when she invited him to open her tour. He declined the gig but quipped, “No, but I would like to go out with you.” Their relationship lasted eight months, ending amicably.
In the mid-’80s, Linda’s heart found a home with “Star Wars” creator George Lucas. Their five-year relationship was one of her longest, but it, too, ended. She later rekindled her musical roots, dating R&B singer Aaron Neville. Their duet “Don’t Know Much” became a hit, but their romance concluded in 1992.
The Politics of Love
Linda’s most publicized relationship was with California Governor Jerry Brown. They graced the cover of Newsweek in April 1979, symbolizing the intersection of politics and pop culture. Linda once remarked, “Dating Jerry was a relief,” but acknowledged their lifestyles were too divergent for a lasting union.
Choosing Independence
Despite numerous relationships, Linda never married. She candidly shared, “What attracts me to men is their creativity. Seeing their brilliance lights a fire inside me, but after a few months, I realize I just can’t stand who they are as people.” Recognizing that marriage wasn’t her path, she chose to start a family on her terms. She adopted a daughter named Mary in 1990 and then a boy named Carlos in 1994. She made the family work even though she didn’t have a man in her life.
Due to her Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Linda can no longer sing. But at 78 years old, her influence still lives on. Linda remains an icon in the music business, and her life story can teach us so many lessons about love, freedom, and simply being yourself.
