Eddie Van Halen’s Favorite Van Halen Songs Revealed
In 2009, the late Eddie Van Halen had a sit down interview with spinner.com. He was asked to give his own set of recommendations on where to start with the band’s music. Something that will be very helpful for starters who are having hard times picking a song from their catalog of music.
Again, it was not an easy thing to do. Aside from the fact that Van Halen continuously put out recorded music for 30 years, there are also three different singers to account for. Indeed, there are a lot of music to consider. So when Eddie enumerated his “own picks,” it was no surprise that he picked two of his most legendary solos such as “Eruption” and “Spanish fly.” He explained:
“I think ‘Eruption’ is one. ‘Spanish Fly,’ just because it’s the same thing except it sounds like Segovia doing something, it’s on a Flamenco guitar.
“I wish somebody would take that technique and do something with it. I had no idea it would trip people out to the point that it did.”
He also added “Runnin’ with the devil,” “Ain’t talkin bout love,” “Unchained,” and “Jump” if he were to consider what people want to hear on every live performance.
Although there were a handful of songs that will continue to outlive the icon, it is also fun to remember Eddie’s hidden gems such as “Girl gone bad” and “Drop dead legs.” He noted:
“Whether it’s a hit or not, I love that song.”
