For nearly half a century, the Eagles have dominated the record books. Now, the band has extended its lead historically. Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 has become the first album ever to receive a quadruple diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America, marking U.S. sales of more than 40 million units.
A Record That Keeps Growing
With the new certification, Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 widens its advantage over the competition. It now leads Thriller by Michael Jackson, which stands at 34 million certified units, by a margin of six million. The Eagles also hold the third-most certified album in RIAA history with Hotel California, which has been updated to 28 million units.
Released in February 1976, the compilation has been breaking new ground since its arrival. It became the first album to earn platinum certification when the RIAA introduced the standard that same year and spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In 2017, the album was inducted into the National Recording Registry for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”
Decades of Impact
The success of Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 has proven anything but fleeting. A sequel, Eagles Greatest Hits Vol. 2, was released in 1982 and went on to achieve diamond status as well, despite the band’s reported misgivings about the project.
To put the milestone into perspective, stacking 40 million vinyl records side by side would stretch roughly 7,575 miles — about the distance from the Eagles’ hometown of Los Angeles to Cairo.
What Comes Next
The 40x platinum plaque will be displayed at Third Encore, the Eagles’ immersive fan experience at The Venetian. The band is also set to resume its Sphere residency, with 12 shows scheduled through the end of March. Meanwhile, a crystal-clear vinyl reissue of Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 is slated for release on Feb. 13, arriving just days before the album’s 50th anniversary.
