Renowned drummer Gerry Conway celebrated for his contributions to the folk and rock music scene, including collaborations with Cat Stevens, Jethro Tull, and Fairport Convention, passed away on Friday at the age of 76.

Fairport Convention’s Simon Nicol honored Conway’s memory in a heartfelt Facebook post, revealing his battle with motor neurone disease, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Nicol reminisced about their enduring friendship and musical partnership spanning back to the late 1960s, emphasizing Conway’s patience, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to his craft.

Conway’s Life and Career

Born in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, England, in 1947, Conway embarked on his musical journey with the British folk band Eclection, making his recording debut on their 1968 self-titled album. His talent quickly garnered attention, leading to collaborations with esteemed acts like Steeleye Span and Al Stewart.

In 1970, Conway joined forces with Cat Stevens, becoming an integral part of his band both in the studio and on tour. Over the following years, he lent his rhythmic prowess to seven consecutive Stevens albums, leaving an indelible mark on classics like Teaser and the Firecat and Back to Earth.

The 1980s saw Conway diversify his portfolio, including stints with Jethro Tull, contributing to albums like The Broadsword and the Beast and the Grammy-winning Crest of a Knave. However, it was his enduring association with Fairport Convention that solidified his status as a revered drummer. Joining the band officially in 1998, Conway’s talent graced nine of their albums, bridging generations of fans with his versatile style.

Despite his diagnosis with MND in 2022 prompting his departure from Fairport Convention, Conway’s legacy continues to resonate within the music community. Cat Stevens himself paid homage to his longtime collaborator, praising Conway’s remarkable skill and personality on social media, expressing hope for his eternal peace.

Gerry Conway’s passing marks the end of an era in the music world, leaving behind a rich legacy of unforgettable performances and timeless rhythms that will continue to inspire generations to come.
