The Journey of “What a Fool Believes”: From Co-Writing to Chart-Topping Success

“What a Fool Believes” was co-written by McDonald and Kenny Loggins. Loggins released his own version in July 1978, but it was The Doobie Brothers’ rendition, released in January 1979, that gained widespread acclaim. The track debuted at number 73 on the Billboard Hot 100 and climbed to number one by April 14, 1979. It also reached number 31 on the UK Singles Chart.

The song’s production was challenging. Producer Ted Templeman and the band recorded multiple takes to achieve the desired feel. Eventually, Templeman edited different sections together to create the final version. Despite initial doubts, the song’s unique blend of soft rock and blue-eyed soul resonated with audiences.

Award-Winning Success and Lasting Impact of “What a Fool Believes”

In 1980, “What a Fool Believes” won Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The album it appeared on, Minute by Minute, also earned the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. The album was certified triple Platinum by the RIAA, highlighting its commercial success.

The song is often cited as a defining example of the “yacht rock” genre, characterized by its smooth melodies and polished production. Its enduring popularity is evident, with the track being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2024. The Doobie Brothers’ ability to evolve their sound and connect with listeners across different eras is showcased in this hit.
